We're Debt Free!
I started writing a post about change a couple of weeks ago and didn’t get back to finishing it completely. The first item of business still holds true - I am starting a new job tomorrow. I worked my last day with Xcentric on Friday, after 5-1/2 years with them. It was my first real job and my time there will not be forgotten. They have great leaders - men who I aspire to be like. I am...

Change
There is a good amount of change going on in our lives these days. The big two are that I am starting a new job on May 2, and our goal is to be debt free except the house by the end of May as well. These are two big life changes. I have been working with my current company for what would have been 6 years this coming September. In todays market, this is a long time. I definitely feel...

Another April 5th
Today is my 29th birthday. And today is the earliest that I have ever woken up on my birthday. 4:38am. I’m not tooting my own horn here, but I’ll still say, that that is pretty early. Sarah and I usually go to Cycle class on Tuesday mornings. I debated whether I wanted to go today as well, but I figured why not. It’s a great way to start the day, and I hadn’t run/been...

Running Times Magazine: Compression Gear: Hype of... →
“There’s a behavioral aspect to knowing, ‘OK, I have this recovery suit and when I’m wearing it, I psychologically think that my body is recovering faster.’ There are benefits to that alone,” says Hadfield. “Even if it is just a psychological effect to wearing compression garments, and there’s no danger in wearing them, why not promote it?”

Do you have life insurance?
Today at work, we had a semi-frequent meeting, also known as a “Town Hall”. It’s just a time to share vision, be on the same page, and open the floor for discussion. Today, our CEO brought in a friend of his from a group for business owners he is a part of. Kevin, the friend, began to speak, with his accent unknown, but later to be determined as South African. He asked us...

Are you still paying off last year's Christmas?
I admit, my intent for writing this post came last week. Sadly, I am just now sitting down to punch it out. I was in the car listening to the radio one morning, and something caught my attention. The station was giving away $1,000 cash. They played a clip from a previous winner who said he was going to use it to pay off his Christmas debt (good idea, I am all for that). But then, the radio deejay...

Mark Bittman: A Food Manifesto for the Future →
Here are some ideas — frequently discussed, but sadly not yet implemented — that would make the growing, preparation and consumption of food healthier, saner, more productive, less damaging and more enduring. In no particular order: End government subsidies to processed food. Begin subsidies to those who produce and sell actual food for direct consumption. Break up the U.S. Department of...

21-Day Vegan Kickstart Meal Plan →
We are thinking of trying this out at our house - most likely starting next Sunday. Actually, we are more than thinking about it. We are planning on it. We would have started today, but we figured it could be good to use the week to plan it out a bit, and ease into it. For example, S bought me some soy milk to use on cereal this week. So that’s a start. And we already eat a good bit of tofu and...

Two Americas: Healthcare →
Yes, we are responsible for keeping ourselves healthy. The Doctors can’t do it for us. However, more and more I am starting to wonder how much of these repeated visits due to sickness are tied to poor food choices, and also if they can be reversed by the changing of a diet. What would happen if Doctors ‘prescribed’ better foods and the benefits of different foods related to...

Some thoughts on bringing change
If I choose to do something that is opposite of the majority, does it even make a difference? This was a recent thought I had, partly after listening to some of The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. As I was eating a veggie burger for dinner last night, my sister-in-law told me that I was reducing my carbon footprint by a substatntial amount, just with that single meal. Now, let me say...

Friday Night Lights: Texas Forever!
I was reading this post from Homesick Texan. She mentioned how she just started watching Friday Night Lights via Netflix, and I couldn’t help but express my extreme enjoyment of it as well. We* recently started Season 3 via Netflix Instant Watch, and cannot get enough. I think one reason that we all enjoy it so much is because it takes place in Texas … and it’s frightfully...

12 mile run tomorrow
Training for another Half Marathon continues. This week has been a little rough in the “quality” category of my running. Some of it has been mental, and some of it has been soreness (I did a couple of long runs in my new Kinvaras, and I thought my calves were more ready than they really were). I think I let some of the bad runs get to me and really discourage/give me an excuse to not...

– Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis One of my goals going into the new year is to read this book, and write a little bit about it (basically just to help me comprehend and think on it some more). This quote basically sums up the first chapter and Lewis’ main point - the fact that almost all...

2011 is our year for debt freedom!
It has been a long and winding road of paying off my student loans. Sarah added it up for me before we got married, and she recalls that it was in the ballpark of approx $75,000. That was back in July of 2007. We have had several mini-victories along the way of paying off this thing, which is awesome and has really helped us keep the momentum. Going into 2011, we are planning to have Sallie Mae...
